Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam undertook a three-day state visit to Malaysia from July 13 to 15, 2026, responding to an invitation from Malaysia's King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. This marked President Tharman's first state visit to Malaysia since assuming office on September 14, 2023 [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. It reciprocated King Sultan Ibrahim's earlier state visit to Singapore in May 2024 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7].
President Tharman arrived in Malaysia on the evening of July 12, 2026, where he was received at Kuala Lumpur International Airport by an honour guard [6]. On July 13, he participated in a state welcoming ceremony at Istana Negara featuring a 21-gun salute and an inspection of the guard of honour [3, 6, 7].
Over the three days, President Tharman met with King Sultan Ibrahim and Queen Raja Zarith Sofiah, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Sultan of Selangor Sharafuddin Idris Shah, Selangor Chief Minister Amirudin Shari, and a range of economic and business leaders [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. He also took part in a state banquet and engaged with the Singaporean community in Malaysia during the visit [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
He was accompanied by his spouse Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, ministers Grace Fu, Zhulkarnain Abdul Rahim, Denise Phua, MPs Nadia Samdin and Edward Chia, as well as officials from the President’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment [1, 2, 4, 5, 6].
Singapore remains Malaysia's second-largest trading partner globally and its largest within ASEAN [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Bilateral trade totaled RM402.35 billion (US$93.97 billion) in 2025, a 1.5% increase from 2024 [3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Trade between January and May 2026 rose sharply by 14.5% to RM189.90 billion (US$47.87 billion), compared with RM165.93 billion (US$37.65 billion) during the same period the previous year [3, 5, 6, 7].
