The Energy Market Authority (EMA) awarded Tuas Power the right to build, own, and operate a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) generating unit with 670 megawatts (MW) capacity at Tuas Power Station on August 20, 2026 [1, 2, 3]. The plant is scheduled to begin commercial operations by December 2031 [1, 2, 3].
The new facility will be hydrogen-ready, capable of burning a fuel blend with up to 30% hydrogen mixed with natural gas. Diesel fuel will be available as a backup option [1, 2]. This is part of Singapore’s push to transition its power sector, requiring all new or repowered natural gas plants from 2024 to be at least 10% more efficient and able to use a minimum 30% hydrogen fuel blend when viable [1, 2].
The 670 MW plant will replace aging generators planned for retirement over the next decade and help meet the city-state’s rising electricity demand. It can provide enough electricity annually to power about 1.2 million four-room public housing flats [1, 2, 3].
Singapore’s peak electricity demand is projected to increase from roughly 8 gigawatts (GW) in 2025 to between 9.6 GW and 11.4 GW by 2031 due to economic growth, electrification of transport, and expansion of energy-intensive industries. Annual electricity demand growth is forecast at 2.4% to 4.8% over the next decade [1, 2, 3].
By 2032, Singapore aims to have at least 11 hydrogen-ready natural gas power plants operating, including four that were completed in 2025 [1, 2]. The EMA launched prior open requests for proposals in 2023 and 2024 for additional CCGT units of similar capacity targeted for operation by 2027, 2029, and 2030 [3].
Puah Kok Keong, Chief Executive of EMA, said, "As Singapore’s electricity demand grows, planning ahead is critical. Tuas Power’s new CCGT will provide the capacity we need for the growth of energy-intensive sectors." [3]
The new plant will contribute to Singapore’s reliable and efficient power supply as the country transitions to cleaner fuels. Tuas Power is expected to complete construction and commence operations by December 2031 [1, 2, 3].
