Dr. Chan Bingyi, 38, was sentenced on May 14, 2026, to 18 months’ jail for negligently administering ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) intravenously to patient Lau Li Ting, 31, without medical necessity, resulting in her death five days later [1, 2, 3, 4].
The treatment occurred on March 8, 2019, at Revival Medical & Aesthetics Centre located on Bras Basah Road (also cited as Esplanade Xchange) [1, 2, 3, 4]. Ms. Lau, who had no underlying medical conditions, sought aesthetic treatment to reduce forehead fine lines [1, 2, 3, 4].
Dr. Chan administered disodium EDTA, a substance meant only for specific medical indications such as heavy metal poisoning or elevated calcium levels, and which should be given only by trained clinicians [1, 2, 3, 4]. Prosecutors stated that disodium EDTA binds preferentially to calcium, making it inherently dangerous due to calcium’s critical role in bodily functions including neurotransmission [1].
Ms. Lau developed EDTA toxicity, suffered a cardiac arrest, and died at Singapore General Hospital on March 13, 2019, five days after treatment [1, 2, 3, 4].
Senior District Judge Ong Hian Sun said Chan "had betrayed the trust reposed in him as a doctor, and he had been motivated by monetary gain." The judge noted Chan knowingly breached his duties despite awareness of the risks [1].
Chan was convicted in January 2026 of negligence causing death after a trial and sentenced in May [1, 2, 3, 4]. He intends to appeal both the conviction and sentence [1, 2, 3, 4].
The court allowed Chan to travel to Japan for leisure with his family between June 14 and June 28, 2026, on conditions including posting an additional bail of SGD 20,000 and surrendering his passport upon return before noon on June 29, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
