The suspected operations could involve sabotage or drone strikes aimed at physically damaging vital facilities. The infrastructure targeted is critical both for Lithuania's national needs and for its synchronization with the continental European electricity grid [2, 3].
Lithuania, a NATO member bordering Russia's Kaliningrad exclave and Belarus, has sharply increased its defense spending, tripling its budget since Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This underscores the heightened regional tensions and Lithuania's focus on strengthening its defenses [1, 4].
Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said that information from NATO states, including Lithuania and Latvia, shows Russia has made previous sabotage attempts in the region. He noted, "Information we are getting from Lithuanian, Latvian and other NATO states, from various agencies there, shows various attempts to do sabotage and to lower the security in our states" [4].
President Nauseda declined to comment on ongoing talks about future US troop rotations in Lithuania, saying negotiations are in progress [3]. The Lithuanian government has not revealed details of additional security measures or intelligence.
