A man was sentenced on May 18, 2026, to 18 years’ imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane for repeatedly raping and sexually assaulting his younger sister in Singapore [1, 2, 3, 4]. Beginning when he was 12 to 13 years old and she was 5 to 6, the sexual abuse continued over seven years until the victim was 12 years old [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
The victim and perpetrator lived with their parents and two older siblings in a one-bedroom flat during the abuse period from 2012 to 2019 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The victim at times resisted the abuse and was physically assaulted, including being punched, slapped, and pinched by her brother [5].
The perpetrator pleaded guilty to one charge of rape and two charges of aggravated sexual assault by penetration. Authorities took eight additional sexual offence charges into consideration during sentencing, ranging from outrage of modesty to rape [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
The prolonged abuse caused grave psychological harm to the victim, who was reported to have engaged in self-harm by cutting her wrists following the trauma [1, 2, 3, 4].
The victim finally reported the abuse to a school counsellor on March 22, 2022, leading to the perpetrator's arrest two days later on March 24, 2022 [1, 2, 3, 4].
The court handed down a combined sentence of 18 years’ jail and 24 cane strokes on May 18, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4].
