Four People's Action Party MPs from the Government Parliamentary Committee for Sustainability and the Environment will introduce a motion in Parliament to enhance Singapore's food resilience and reduce food waste amid rising food prices and global uncertainties [1, 2, 3]. The MPs leading the effort are Poh Li San (chair), Nadia Ahmad Samdin, Valerie Lee, and Ng Shi Xuan [1, 2, 3].
The motion aims to ensure affordable food access despite risks from geopolitical tensions and climate change, such as hotter weather due to El Niño and disruptions to Middle East shipping routes, which have contributed to price increases [1, 2, 3]. The MPs plan to raise proposals supporting local farmers, strengthening supply chain resilience, improving food waste management, and bolstering the alternative protein sector [1, 3].
Singapore produced about 16,600 tonnes of vegetables and 3,800 tonnes of seafood locally in 2025, while generating close to 800,000 tonnes of food waste that year, averaging approximately 128 to 130 kilograms per person [1, 2, 3]. Current food security measures include diversified imports, stockpiling essentials like rice and frozen meat, supporting local production, and building international partnerships [1, 3].
The MPs gathered feedback from more than 130 stakeholders including community gardeners, academics, fish farmers, and food rescue organizations to help shape the motion [1, 3]. Poh Li San said, “(Food resilience) is something that concerns all Singaporeans. It concerns our future generations because if we don’t set things right at the beginning, then things may get worse and worse” [1]. She also noted that while rising food costs worry many, “upstream improvements need to be discussed so that Singapore has a robust infrastructure in the long run to serve its food needs” [2].
Singapore released an updated national food resilience strategy, Singapore Food Story 2, in late 2025 [2]. The government is also reviewing its Zero Waste Masterplan following a decline in recycling rates [2].
The motion will be debated in Parliament starting September 8, 2026 [2].
