Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan arrived in Singapore on June 2 as the first stop of his Asia-Pacific tour to strengthen bilateral relations and address regional and global challenges [1, 2].
During his visit, Fidan held meetings with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, and Interior Minister Kasiviswanathan Shanmugam. The discussions covered cooperation in the economy, trade, investment, defense industry, security, digital transformation, and connectivity [2]. The leaders stressed the importance of resolving ongoing crises through dialogue and diplomacy.
Fidan also delivered a special lecture at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Singapore on June 2. He described Türkiye and Singapore as among "a handful of wise and responsible nations" that have rejected "strategic resignation" amid a rapidly fraying global order but instead embraced active diplomacy and regional partnerships [1]. He emphasized the fast-changing international order, where diplomacy, war, economy, and security intermingle due to hybrid conflicts and hyperconnectivity.
Highlighting "disciplined diplomacy and strategic agency" as key pillars, Fidan said these elements are crucial to building stability in an age of uncertainty [1]. He expressed that Türkiye regards Singapore as strategically important both regionally and beyond and pledged to further develop bilateral relations and close cooperation on international platforms [2].
The visit marks the opening of Fidan's Asia-Pacific tour, aimed at expanding Türkiye's engagement with the region. Meetings with Singaporean leaders and participation in the IISS lecture set the tone for continued dialogue and partnership.
