Lewis Hamilton confirmed on May 21 at the Canadian Grand Prix press conference that he is under contract with Ferrari through the 2027 Formula 1 season [1, 2, 3, 4]. The six-time world champion dismissed rumors about retiring, saying, "There are a lot of people who are trying to retire me and that is not even in my thoughts" [1]. "I'm still focused, I'm still motivated. I still love what I do with all my heart and I'm going to be here for quite some time, so get used to it," Hamilton added [2].
Hamilton joined Ferrari in 2025 after a long career with Mercedes, but he has yet to win a race for the Italian team. His last Formula 1 victory was the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix [2, 3, 4]. However, he secured his first podium for Ferrari by finishing third at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix on April 16 [2, 3, 4].
The 41-year-old driver, who will turn 42 in January 2026, holds a record 105 Formula 1 wins and 104 pole positions [2, 3, 4]. Despite his pedigree, Hamilton sits fifth in the 2026 championship after four races, eight points behind third-placed teammate Charles Leclerc [1]. Leclerc also leads Hamilton 4-2 in qualifying sessions this season with an average pace advantage of 0.081 seconds [1].
Hamilton revealed that he chose not to use the Ferrari simulator before the Canadian and Chinese Grands Prix. He explained that simulator setups sometimes contradict real track conditions, so he preferred to focus more on data. "You find a setup (in the simulator) that you're comfortable with, you get to the track and everything's opposite. So then you're undoing the things you've learned. So it's kind of hit and miss. I just decided, for this one, I'm just going to sit it out and focus more on the data," he said [2, 3, 4].
Reflecting on his career, Hamilton said, "From the outside world results are what people call success, but I think internally, for me, it's just progress. If you're progressing, then you're succeeding. I don't really put a lot of pressure on. I've always said I'm really grateful for the records and those sorts of things, but they're not things I ever think of" [2].
Hamilton's contract confirmation comes after hints in 2025 but marks the first explicit statement from the driver himself [1]. He remains focused on racing and set to compete through the 2027 season with Ferrari, aiming to add more wins to his record.
