Aston Villa completed the signing of 25-year-old Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea in a club-record transfer worth up to £65 million ($88 million) on August 28. Jackson agreed to a five-year contract with the Premier League club [1, 2, 3].

Jackson spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich where he scored 11 goals and helped the team win the Bundesliga and German Cup [1, 2]. At Chelsea, he made 81 appearances and scored 30 goals since joining in 2023, despite being frozen out and training separately at times [2].

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery praised Jackson as "a winner" and "a very competitive player" who is a "good player to add into our squad," adding "But now it's a new chapter here with Nicolas Jackson" [4].

The signing comes as Villa prepare to replace striker Ollie Watkins, 30, who is departing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal in a deal valued around £50-51 million ($67-69 million) [4, 5, 2, 3]. Watkins is Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer with 91 goals and has scored 108 in all competitions during his six years at the club since his £28 million move from Brentford in 2020 [4, 5, 6].

Watkins made headlines after refusing to play in Villa’s Premier League opener, a 4-0 loss to Brighton on August 23, prompting an apology he issued that was accepted by Emery and the squad [4, 5, 6, 2, 3]. Emery reflected, "He told us after the Brighton match he was sorry and that he had made a mistake. He was wrong, but we accepted it. The players as well," and described Watkins as "a fantastic guy even more than a player" [4].

Other experienced players including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, Youri Tielemans, Lucas Digne, and Emi Martinez have recently left the club as part of a wider squad overhaul [1, 2]. Leon Goretzka also joined Villa on a free transfer from Bayern Munich as part of the rebuilding effort [4, 5, 6].

Emery stressed the need to act swiftly in rebuilding, saying, "We took decisions because it's good for the club. Of course, we don't want to be a club that sells players, but the responsibility is there" [4].

Aston Villa will face Arsenal in a Premier League fixture on August 31, with Jackson possibly available for selection [4, 5, 6].
