Cash App launched a $25 wand-shaped NFC payment device called the Cash App Tag on June 4, 2026, allowing users to tap to pay at any outlet accepting Visa tap-to-pay transactions [1, 2]. The wand links directly to the user's Cash App Card, enabling payments without needing to take out a phone or card [1, 2].
Users activate the wand by either connecting it through the Cash App or holding the device against the back of their phone to register it with their account [1, 2]. It includes a keychain ring for easy carrying and can be locked or deactivated remotely via the app if lost [1, 2].
Thomas Templeton, Hardware Lead at Block, said Cash App Tags "make payments visible and social for the first time," contrasting them with "invisible digital wallets or buried plastic cards." He added, "payment should be just the opposite. It should be visible. It should be fun. And social and expressive" [1, 2].
The wand is part of Cash App's new NFC-powered tag hardware lineup designed to be whimsical and appeal to younger users, specifically Gen Z [1, 2]. Cash App aims to expand the tag lineup over the summer to include various shapes, sizes, and limited-edition versions [1].
This hardware follows Cash App’s previous efforts to attract younger users, including launching teen accounts in 2021 and a parent-controlled debit card for children aged 6 to 12 [1].
Cash App’s next step includes rolling out more tag variants throughout the summer to broaden its hardware selection.
