Spotify announced it will begin labeling AI-generated artist profiles with an “AI Persona” badge starting mid-September 2026. The badge will be visible on the artist banner, About section, search results, and track rows in playlists to clearly indicate when a profile appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated identity [1, 2, 3, 4].
Today, August 11, 2026, artists can voluntarily disclose their profiles as AI Personas through the Spotify for Artists portal [5, 3, 4]. After the September rollout, Spotify will also use a combination of human review and AI-powered detection to identify profiles that may represent AI-generated personas and apply the label accordingly [1, 2, 3, 4].
Music from artists labeled as AI Personas will be excluded by default from Spotify's editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a user explicitly follows that AI Persona [5, 1, 2, 3, 4]. This move aims to prevent low-quality or misleading AI-generated content from flooding the platform while maintaining trust with listeners.
Spotify emphasized the need for transparency and authenticity in artist-fan relationships. “Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” the company said [5]. They added, “True artist-fan connection can only be built on a foundation of trust and authenticity. In music, that means listeners need to be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they say they are” [4]. Spotify also highlighted that their programming focuses on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music [1].
The AI Persona label denotes that the artist’s identity may be AI-generated but does not confirm whether AI was used to create the music itself [5, 2, 4]. Users will be able to flag songs or artists they suspect of being AI-generated in the future, and artists will have opportunities to appeal if they believe they were mislabeled [5, 1, 2, 4].
Spotify has been expanding AI-related features such as AI Credits and AI-powered playlists while balancing the need to guard against low-quality AI-generated content [5, 1, 3]. The company plans to launch the visible labeling and recommendation restrictions on AI Personas in mid-September 2026 following this voluntary disclosure phase.
