Metanet Software announced it is developing a multiplayer-focused sequel, N Plus Infinity Times Two, set to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC [1, 2]. The game supports up to four players, both online and locally, aiming to blend competitive and cooperative gameplay in a "virtual couch party game" format with a low skill floor and no skill ceiling [1, 2].
Co-founders Raigan Burns and Mare Sheppard described the new title as a significant expansion of the N+ multiplayer concept, similar to how N++ improved upon the original N single-player platformer. Burns said, "We don't think we can substantially improve upon [N++] in terms of being a hardcore single player platformer, so for this new project we're trying to go a bit perpendicular" [1, 2]. He added, "For N Plus Infinity Times Two, we're kind of setting out to make the ultimate version of that initial foray into multiplayer platforming, this time bringing to bear two decades of learning and knowledge and development of our craft" [2].
N++ was released in 2015 as the definitive single-player iteration of the series, featuring over 4,000 levels and limited local multiplayer options [1, 2]. Metanet began prototyping the sequel in 2022, motivated by a renewed desire to revisit their multiplayer vision. Burns said, "We started getting the ‘let’s take another crack at it’ bug in 2022" [1].
The game design draws from influences such as Smash Brothers, Rocket League, Counter-Strike, Towerfall, and It Takes Two to combine competitive and cooperative elements [2]. Metanet remains a two-person studio that operates deliberately slowly to maintain creative freedom. Burns commented, "We like being in a band. That’s fun. Being in a lot of meetings and doing a lot of managing: not fun" [1]. Sheppard added, "It’s important to feel that magic. That’s what’s compelling about making games" [1].
N Plus Infinity Times Two is planned to launch in 2027 on all major platforms, including PS5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC [1].
