Meta acquired Within, the studio behind the VR fitness game Supernatural, for around $400 million in 2023 after an eight-month antitrust battle [1]. A few years later, Meta cut much of its VR team and announced it would stop adding new content to Supernatural [1, 2].
In early 2026, Meta laid off much of the remaining VR staff and confirmed the original Supernatural app would no longer receive updates [1, 2]. Despite scaling back its VR division, Meta said it remains supportive of the transition and continues to develop new VR hardware [1, 2].
The original creators of Supernatural have now launched a new independent company called Supernatural Health. They will release a standalone version of the Supernatural app on Meta Quest later this year [1, 2]. Supernatural Health said, "Supernatural is being reborn. Same coaches, same DNA, same obsession with making fitness feel like the best part of your day — now under a new, independent company we’re starting from the ground up" [1]. They added that Meta has been supportive and provided critical resources during Supernatural’s early growth [1].
Users of the original app must migrate to the new version, as the original Supernatural app will be sunsetted on December 3, 2026 [2]. Subscription prices will increase, with annual plans costing $180 up from $100 previously, and monthly subscriptions doubling from $10 to $20 [2].
One longtime user expressed mixed emotions over the transition, saying, "Like so many of us I was so devastated when the coaches were let go and we were told our beloved Supernatural... would never get any better than it was. What we had was what we had. We all felt like it was purchased to kill. I am such a sap. Why am I tearing up?" [1].
The launch of the independent Supernatural app aims to preserve the community and fitness experience originally created, while giving the development team direct control over its future.
