A man who took several people hostage inside a Chase Bank building in downtown Bakersfield, California, was fatally shot by FBI personnel following a standoff that lasted approximately 12 hours from Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday [1, 2, 3].

Police first responded around 1 p.m. Tuesday to reports of a bomb threat and a suspect barricading himself with multiple hostages inside the bank, located about 110 miles north of Los Angeles [1]. Two hostages were released Tuesday after negotiations with police [1, 2, 3].

Specialized law enforcement units, including the FBI Hostage Rescue Team and Bakersfield Police SWAT, bomb squad, K9, gang unit, negotiators, and drone teams were deployed to resolve the incident. "Every single resource is at the site's disposal," Bakersfield Police Sergeant Eric Celedon said. "We had every single resource at our disposal out here to bring this to the safest resolution possible" [1, 3].

Nearby buildings such as Bakersfield City Hall and police headquarters, along with surrounding roads, were closed or evacuated for security during the standoff [1, 3].

On Wednesday, after the nearly 12-hour standoff ended, all remaining hostages were released unharmed and received medical evaluation and treatment at the scene [1, 2, 3]. The suspect was fatally shot in an officer-involved shooting that ended the crisis [1, 2, 3].

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or motives [3]. The FBI and Bakersfield police continue their investigation into the incident.

The standoff began Tuesday afternoon and extended into Wednesday, drawing extensive local and federal law enforcement resources to downtown Bakersfield. The suspect’s actions prompted citywide closures and evacuations until the situation was resolved.
