Republican Reps. Mike Turner and Mike Carey of Ohio voted with Democrats to extend immigration protections for Haitians in the U.S. as the Trump administration seeks to end temporary protected status for 350,000 Haitians and thousands more Syrians. [1]

The vote put the Ohio lawmakers at odds with President Donald Trump and with most Republicans in the House. Only 10 of 214 House Republicans backed the bill, which the article said is unlikely to pass the Republican-controlled Senate. [1]

The split comes as Republicans in Ohio face pressure from Haitian communities in the state, including in Springfield, where the article said about 10,000 Haitian immigrants live. Ohio voted for Trump by double digits in the 2024 presidential election, but the article said Republicans there are siding with Haitian immigrants ahead of elections this year. [1]

The issue reached the Supreme Court last Wednesday, when it heard a challenge to the administration’s effort to end temporary protected status for Haitians and Syrians. [1]

Carl Ruby, who tried to raise the issue with Turner, said he and Viles Dorsainvil met the congressman at an airport recently and pressed him on Haitians in Springfield. Ruby said, "I hadn’t gotten anywhere in getting an appointment with him; all his staff were putting us off." He also said Turner "clearly understands the economic benefit of having immigrants here" and is "not on the same page with many members of his party who are willing to step back and let the president do whatever he wants."
