Russian drones struck a shopping centre in the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on August 21, killing at least 16 people and wounding over 130, officials said [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. The industrial city, about 60 km from the frontline and the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, bore the brunt of the assault.
The attack consisted of two drone strikes roughly 30 minutes apart. The second strike targeted emergency responders at the scene, a tactic known as a 'double-tap,' Zelenskyy described as “absolutely cynical and despicable” and “nothing less than terrorist acts” [1, 2, 3, 4, 10, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9]. Ukrainian regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said 29 people were in serious condition, including five children, and 22 to 25 children were among the injured [2, 5, 7, 9]. Nine individuals, including two children, remained missing during ongoing rescue efforts [2, 9].
The attack follows a series of intensified Russian offensives. On August 20, Russian missile strikes on Kyiv killed 17 people [1, 5, 6]. Other Russian attacks affected the Mykolaiv, Donetsk, Kherson, and Sumy regions, causing civilian casualties [1, 5, 6, 8, 9]. Ukrainian forces launched retaliatory drone strikes deep inside Russia, hitting targets in the Perm, Belgorod, and Krasnodar regions and causing civilian casualties, including three children killed by debris from a Ukrainian drone strike on a warehouse in Krasnodar reported on August 24 [5, 6, 8, 11].
Zelenskyy condemned the Kryvyi Rih strikes as “an absolute Russian atrocity” and vowed Ukraine would respond [8]. Kryvyi Rih officials confirmed 16 civilians died, with 130 injured and nine missing, and declared August 23 a day of mourning for the victims [9].
French President Emmanuel Macron pledged accelerated delivery of advanced air defense missile systems to Ukraine to help repel ongoing attacks, stating, “We will provide Ukraine all necessary means to defend its airspace and repel this aggression” on August 23 [12].
Russian authorities have not publicly addressed the Kryvyi Rih strike [9].
