Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer from Virginia, received a life sentence without parole for the murders of his wife, Christine Banfield, and Joseph Ryan in February 2023. The killings took place at the Banfield family home on February 24, 2023 [1, 2].

Banfield and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, conspired to murder Christine and frame Joseph Ryan, who was lured to the house under the pretense of a consensual rape fantasy as part of the plot [1, 2]. Judge Penney Azcarate described Banfield’s conduct as "evil, calculated" and imposed a life sentence without parole in accordance with Virginia’s aggravated murder statutes [1, 2].

In addition to the life sentence, Banfield was convicted of child endangerment as their four-year-old daughter was present during the killings. He received an additional five years for that charge and three more years for a firearms conviction [1].

Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement in the murders [2].

During sentencing, Judge Azcarate said, "The disregard of the life of your wife, someone you supposedly loved, is almost unfathomable." She added, "The level of cruelty, calculation and inhumanity in this case reflects something far deeper than anger or impulse – it reflects evil. Which is why I carry no burden and find no hesitation in sentencing you to life." [1, 2]

Banfield denied responsibility at trial, stating, "I'm not trying to diminish in any way what [Christine’s] life was... But I am not responsible. I am not responsible for her death. This is not a knife that I ever held in my hand, and I never stabbed her." [2]

Christine Banfield’s sister, Danielle Hocker, expressed grief, saying, "When she was born, ‘I’ became ‘we’. I haven’t stopped saying ‘we’ when I speak about my childhood after her death, except now when I do, it takes my breath away – a pause filled with love that has nowhere to go." [1]

Joseph Ryan’s mother—named as Deidre Fisher in one source and Deirdre Fisher in another—stated, "Joe wasn’t just the disposable caricature he was made out to be... He had a face, he had a name, he had a life. But Brendan Banfield shot his face, soiled his name and treated his life as disposable." [2]

Banfield was convicted by a jury in February 2026 and sentenced on June 5, 2026. The au pair received her sentence the same day [1, 2].
