Caitlin Clark set a new WNBA record for most games with 20 or more points and 10 or more assists, achieving her 12th such game on Sunday while leading the Indiana Fever to an 89-78 win over the Seattle Storm [1, 2, 3, 4].
Clark first broke the record on Friday, May 15, against the Washington Mystics. Initially credited with 32 points and 8 assists, the WNBA later reviewed the box score and added two missed assists on made three-pointers, correcting her assist total to 10. This revision made Clark the first player in league history with multiple 30-point, 10-assist games [1, 5, 2].
On May 17 against Seattle, Clark scored 21 points and recorded 10 assists in just 23 minutes of play. She became the first player to reach 20+ points and 10+ assists in under 25 minutes. Clark made all 9 of her free throws and shot 5-for-10 from the field despite the Fever missing star center Aliyah Boston due to a lower-leg injury [1, 6, 3].
"I always take pride in being able to set my teammates up for success," Clark said after the game. "I only played 23 minutes tonight and I had 10 assists. I think it shows the potential of what this team can do offensively. Like, they gotta make the shots for me to get the assists, so half of it is them. I gotta set them up for success." She added, "No reason to press. Get my teammates involved. Take what the defense gives me. I thought I did a good job of getting to the line, so there’s no need to probably shoot a bunch of shots. I mean, I only played 23 minutes but I also got to the line nine times… I think that’s what I can do a better job of – really trying to get to the line and free points." [1, 3]
The WNBA drew criticism for promoting the Fever vs Storm game heavily with rookie Raven Johnson in marketing graphics instead of Clark, the team's star and leading scorer. Johnson played 17 minutes off the bench and did not score. OutKick founder Clay Travis remarked, "Was Michael Jordan ever not the lead graphic on any Bulls game when he was a member of the team? You can say this is a small thing, but I would guarantee you Bill Cartwright, Luc Longley & Bill Wennington never got the promo graphic over Jordan. Sell the stars! Marketing 101." [2, 6]
Fever teammate Sophie Cunningham showed support for Clark and the team despite some fan pushback, bluntly expressing "LET ME LIVE!!!!" [4]
Clark reached 12 games with 20 points and 10 assists in only 57 career appearances, a pace unmatched in WNBA history [1, 2]. Indiana Fever will next look to build on this momentum with their upcoming schedule following Clark’s record-breaking performances.
