Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was arrested and charged with shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their home in Ashburn, Virginia on Sunday evening [1, 2].
Mia Bieniemy, 57, was found with multiple gunshot wounds by the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office, which responded to the scene at 7:32 p.m. Eastern time. She was hospitalized in stable but serious condition [1, 3, 2].
Elijah Bieniemy was charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center [1, 2].
Eric Bieniemy was at the Kansas City Chiefs training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri when the shooting occurred Sunday evening and was absent from the team’s practice on Monday [1, 3, 2]. The Chiefs issued a statement saying, "The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy’s family. Out of respect for their privacy, we won’t have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them" [1, 2].
Police continue to investigate the shooting. It is expected that Eric Bieniemy will request temporary leave from the team to be with his wife and family [2].
