Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe spoke to reporters on August 28 about the progress of diversity in tennis, emphasizing the sport's expanding global reach and inclusion of players from many backgrounds [1, 2, 3].

Pegula said, "I think the best part of tennis is there is so much diversity. Everybody from around the world can play." She highlighted the strength of tennis’s diverse fan base and players from numerous countries, calling it "one of the most diverse sports." Pegula pointed to increased representation of Black players and growth in Asia, citing stars like Alexandra Eala of the Philippines and Qinwen Zheng of China [1, 2, 4, 3].

Tiafoe noted strong diversity in women’s tennis and a rise in players of varied backgrounds near the top of the men’s game. He recalled that he and Arthur Fils made history last week at the Cincinnati Open as the first Black players to face off in an ATP 1000 final, saying, "That's never happened in tennis. That's a huge thing" [1, 2, 3].

However, Tiafoe stressed that cost and access remain major hurdles for many potential players. "USTA is doing great getting underserved community kids to play the game. Obviously, so many things cost, racquets, strings, coaching, shoes, whatever," he said. He added, "It's going the right direction. It's not something that's going to change overnight. Cost is cost, right? It's got to come from somewhere" [1].

Data from the USTA’s 2026 U.S. Tennis Participation Report showed that 3.7 million Black Americans played tennis at least once in 2025, an increase of more than 450,000 from 2024. Hispanic and Latino players made up 19% of U.S. participants in 2025, up from 18% in 2024, while Asian/Pacific Islander players accounted for 11%, steady from the previous year [1, 2, 3].

Pegula also noted the U.S. Open setting in New York mirrors tennis’s diversity, with many countries and types of fans supporting players across the draw [1, 2, 3]. Alexandra Eala, who won her first WTA title earlier this month, will face American Mary Stoiana. Qinwen Zheng qualified to meet Kristina Liutova in the tournament [4].
