A federal judge declined to block the UFC mixed martial arts event UFC Freedom 250 scheduled for June 14, 2026, on the White House South Lawn in Washington, D.C. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. The event will honor President Donald Trump's 80th birthday and the 250th anniversary of the United States, also known as the semiquincentennial [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
The UFC fights will occur inside a 92-foot-tall, 600-ton steel claw-shaped structure built especially for the event at the South Lawn [1, 3, 4, 5]. After the event on Sunday, the claw structure is planned to be dismantled starting Monday [4].
Plaintiffs suing to block the event claimed it was an unlawful private, for-profit sporting event on federal property without required congressional approval [1, 3, 5]. They also alleged misuse of national monuments such as the Lincoln Memorial and the South Lawn, arguing the event was not a genuine celebration of the nation's 250th anniversary but rather a commercial tribute to the president and UFC brand [1, 2, 3, 5]. Their lawyers said, "The President’s administration is granting the UFC an extraordinary business opportunity it may not lawfully grant, and in exchange the UFC is throwing an event at which its leadership, fighters, advertisers, and various celebrities will all pay tribute to the President on his birthday" [1].
U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled against the plaintiffs on June 12, saying they failed to show irreparable harm and that they delayed too long in filing their lawsuit. “In the context of an emergency application — and coupled with the fact that the UFC fight date was long ago known — it is fair to say Plaintiffs unreasonably delayed bringing suit, undercutting their claims of irreparable harm,” Mehta said [2, 4, 5]. The Trump administration called the lawsuit “obstructionist, baseless and dilatory” and said the event will be “one of the most historic sporting events in our nation's history” during the semiquincentennial celebrations [2].
The UFC event will feature a lightweight unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, headlining the fight card on June 14 [2, 6]. The co-main event will be an interim heavyweight title fight between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira [2, 6]. At a June 12 news conference near the Lincoln Memorial, Gaethje and Topuria appeared tense, with Gaethje saying, “Look where we’re at, look at this beautiful view and you want to act like an animal?” and Topuria responding, “I know I’m best in the world, in two days we’re going to share the same place. I know I’m the best, just prove me wrong if you can” [6].
The UFC reportedly spent about $60 million organizing the event [2]. Plaintiffs include a Vietnam War veteran and an activist represented by the nonprofit Public Integrity Project [2, 4, 5].
UFC Freedom 250 will take place on June 14, followed by the removal of the temporary claw structure beginning the next day [4].
