MicahJo Barnett suffered a medical emergency on the sideline during the first quarter of William Jewell College's season opener against Fort Lewis College on Saturday at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Missouri. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. local time, leading to the game being suspended with 4 minutes 32 seconds remaining in the first quarter and ultimately canceled [1, 2].

Barnett experienced seizure-like symptoms during the emergency and was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the early afternoon [1, 3, 2]. Earlier in the quarter, he had scored the only touchdown of the game on a one-yard run with 5:15 remaining [1, 3, 2].

Barnett was a junior business administration major who had earned academic all-conference honors in 2025. He was entering his third season with the Jewell Cardinals football team after rushing for 366 yards and 4 touchdowns in five games last year before a season-ending injury. As a freshman in 2024, he appeared in eight games, rushing for 91 yards and two touchdowns [1, 3, 2].

A native of Shawnee, Kansas, Barnett had six siblings and led Liberty North High School to a state football title in his senior year [2]. William Jewell’s interim president, Dr. Drew Van Horn, thanked first responders for their swift and professional actions. “We appreciate the response from the sheriff’s office, the police department, EMS team, physician for the team, everybody responded so quickly, so well,” he said. “Our hearts are heavy and we just appreciate all the support that we have received from the greater community” [2].

William Jewell College and its community expressed mourning over Barnett’s death. The school said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss” [1]. The athletic department announced a vigil would be held on the college quad at 8 p.m. Saturday night in Barnett’s honor [1, 2].
