1Password announced on August 11 a new browser integration for Claude AI that enables the AI to use stored usernames, passwords, and multi-factor authentication codes to complete tasks without exposing sensitive data to Claude or Anthropic’s servers [1, 2].
The integration employs a zero-exposure security framework, which injects decrypted credentials directly into websites through a secure local channel. This process ensures that plaintext credentials are never revealed to Claude or stored in the AI’s model context [1, 3, 2]. Nancy Wang, CTO of 1Password, explained, “When an agent needs to authenticate, 1Password decrypts the credential on-device and injects it directly into the target website through a secure channel. Claude can ask 1Password to perform that action, but 1Password does not return the plaintext credential to Claude or place it in the model’s context.” [3]
Credential decryption and autofill actions happen locally on the user’s Mac using 1Password’s standard autofill engine, without transmitting sensitive information off-device [3]. Access to credentials is granted on a per-task basis and requires user approval through biometric prompts like Touch ID or a password, preventing unauthorized use [1, 3, 2]. This authorization expires immediately when the task ends, ensuring no standing access between sessions [3, 2].
When an AI agent controls the browser in what 1Password calls Agentic Mode, the system automatically locks down to limit vault access only to credentials explicitly granted for the current task. According to a 1Password statement, “The moment an AI agent takes control of the browser, 1Password locks down automatically, limiting access to only the credentials explicitly granted for the current task. Nothing else in the 1Password vault is reachable.” [1]
After each autofill, 1Password scans web pages to verify no sensitive information remains exposed before control returns to Claude [1, 2]. Currently, the integration supports login credentials only. Support for payment cards and identity details will be added after launch [1].
1Password for Claude is available now on Mac for business, family, and individual users. It requires the 1Password desktop app, browser extensions, and the Claude app or extensions [1, 2]. 1Password plans to expand Agentic Mode support to other AI agents beyond Claude as the ecosystem grows [2].
