Google announced the Pixel Watch 5 alongside the Pixel 11 smartphone family during its Made by Google event on August 12 in the US [1, 2, 3, 4]. The new smartwatch introduces a smarter Gemini AI assistant with offline capabilities that allow users to start timers, launch workouts, and manage alarms without internet, delivering faster responses than competitors in some tests [5, 1, 6, 3]. It also supports new interaction gestures like a one-handed double pinch to select, confirm, and send proactive AI suggestions [5].

The Pixel Watch 5 features advanced health monitoring, including blood pressure pattern tracking, insulin resistance trend analysis, and a Breathing Emergency Detection that can call emergency services if a severe oxygen drop is detected. This last feature launches first in select European countries, pending US regulatory approval [1, 2, 7, 4]. Francis Hoe, Google Pixel Watch product manager, said the device uses data from sensors like PPG, accelerometer, and barometer combined with an AI algorithm running on the watch to detect oxygen drops and share location with emergency services [2].

Sandeep Waraich, Senior Director of Wearables at Google, said improvements in sensor data quality underpin these health advances. "All these large sensor models can detect these signatures, insulin resistance, blood pressure trends—but underneath, they need a really capable raw signal," he said [2].

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip, the Pixel Watch 5 offers 50% more RAM, a 12% CPU boost, and about 20% faster performance than its predecessor, the Pixel Watch 4 [5, 8, 3, 4]. It also doubles storage capacity to 64GB [4]. The device maintains a similar design to the Pixel Watch 4, with the same 41mm and 45mm sizes and display specs, adding new color options and a Stephen Curry Special Edition with a unique band [6, 8, 4].

GPS route tracking accuracy is claimed to have doubled in challenging environments compared to previous models [5, 8, 3]. A new bedtime watch face reduces nighttime distractions, and the Smart Wake feature helps users wake at optimal sleep cycle points [1].

The Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399, with the Stephen Curry Special Edition priced at $579 or more. It became available for pre-order on August 12, with shipping scheduled from August 20 [1, 3, 4]. Later in fall 2026, several new health software features dubbed Health Guardian—tracking blood pressure, insulin resistance, and sleep breathing quality with monthly trend summaries—will be released for Pixel Watch 4, Fitbit Air, and older Pixel Watches through Google Health app updates [2, 7].
