Sonos revealed two new audio products: the Sonos Beam Ultra soundbar and Sonos Ace Ultra headphones, marking its first product launch since 2024 [1, 2, 3].
Alongside the hardware, Sonos introduced Sonos 27, a major update to its audio operating system. The update includes a refreshed app interface with improved tab navigation, room sorting, volume controls, and upcoming system health diagnostics [2, 3].
Sonos 27 integrates generative AI features, including Sonos 27voice, the company’s proprietary voice assistant tailored for music and system control. This assistant will be available as an early access opt-in feature this fall [1, 2, 3].
Additionally, Sonos 27mcp (Model Context Protocol) enables connectivity with external AI models such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. It will launch in early access on September 8, 2026 [1, 2, 3].
Looking ahead to 2027, users will be able to create up to 10 customizable AI agents with different voices and roles to enhance their audio experience [1, 2, 3].
The Sonos 27 software supports controlling all currently compatible Sonos products, utilizing existing device microphones to work with the new voice assistant [1, 3]. Two new features allow Play and Move 2 portable speakers to automatically function as wireless surround speakers in home theater setups without manual configuration [1].
Sonos Senior Director of Product Development Brandon Holley said, "After two years of turmoil, Sonos attempts a triumphant return" [1]. Holley, also interim hardware lead, noted the company’s strategic shift, stating, "For years people have been seeing us as a speaker company. What we actually are is an audio operating system" [2].
Sonos Vice President of Software Sid Patel added the 2027 app was developed with direct customer feedback to improve usability [2]. The update follows a disastrous 2024 app launch that led to CEO Patrick Spence’s dismissal and a product pause in 2025 [1, 3]. Sonos plans to release OS versions annually, starting with Sonos 27 in 2026 [3].
The Sonos 27mcp AI connectivity feature will become available as early access on September 8, 2026, and the Sonos 27voice assistant will launch as an opt-in beta this fall.
