Nicolas Cage revealed he turned down a role in Christopher Nolan's 2002 psychological thriller Insomnia, a decision that led to strained relations with several prominent directors. [1, 2]
Cage said many directors, including Nolan, Woody Allen, and Paul Thomas Anderson, did not call him back after he declined their film offers. "Most of them, they get their feelings hurt or something and don't call you back. It's happened a million times to me," Cage said. [1]
Among the notable directors who did not return his calls, Cage cited Paul Thomas Anderson's early project Hard Eight, which he also declined. "He’d shown me a short film with Philip Baker Hall – and we were going to do something and it didn’t work out," Cage said, referring to Anderson. [2]
By contrast, David O. Russell was the only director who called Cage back after he initially said no. "David did call me back, and I thought that it showed a lot of class that he would call me back and invite me again," Cage said.
