Blizzard announced it will stop adding new heroes and maps to Overwatch's Stadium mode while continuing seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards [1, 2, 3]. The company said the decision was driven by the mode's relatively low player share and a strategic shift to apply lessons from Stadium to other Overwatch projects [1, 2, 3].
Stadium mode currently supports 33 of Overwatch's 52 heroes, a curated subset with custom builds, perks, and modified abilities inspired by MOBA gameplay [1, 2, 3]. The mode launched on April 22, 2025, initially with 17 heroes, and expanded gradually since then [1, 2, 3].
According to Blizzard's June 2026 data, Stadium accounts for about 6% of daily Overwatch players, split evenly between Stadium Ranked and Stadium Unranked at roughly 3% each [1, 2, 3]. In comparison, the most popular modes are Unranked Role Queue 5v5 at about 54% and Ranked Role Queue 5v5 at 37% of daily players [1, 2, 3]. 6v6 formats are rising but still exceed Stadium, with Unranked Open Queue 6v6 at approximately 19% and Ranked Open Queue 6v6 near 8% [1, 2, 3].
Blizzard associate director Aaron Keller said, "With this in mind, while we’ll continue supporting Stadium with seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards, we’re not planning on expanding Stadium with new Heroes or maps. Instead, we're taking what lessons we've gleaned from building it and applying those lessons (and those talented devs) to our future plans" [1]. He confirmed the developers previously focused on Stadium will be reassigned to other Overwatch projects [1, 3].
Blizzard will continue monitoring Stadium balance and providing support but will halt new content development for the mode [1, 2, 3].
