Bungie will release Marathon Season 2 worldwide on June 2, 2026, adding a horror-themed nighttime variant of the Dire Marsh map called Night Marsh. This new map features darker lighting, survival horror atmosphere, new enemies, and environmental anomalies that challenge players' navigation and combat skills [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].

Season 2 also introduces a new Sentinel Runner shell class focused on defense and area control. The class includes a Defender System to protect against grenades and missiles, a tactical snare mine ability, and passive perks such as motion tracking and damage resistance to help players hold territory [2, 3, 4, 6]. Bungie described Night Marsh as "slower-paced than Day Marsh," emphasizing survival horror gameplay with fewer players and extra environmental threats [6].

Two new weapons will launch with the season: the KKV-9SD submachine gun featuring a fast rate of fire and an integrated suppressor, and the D54 Battle Pistol designed for 1v1 duels with three-round bursts [2, 7, 6].

The season brings a new progression system called the Cradle, which lets players convert weapons and equipment into experience points to enhance stats and perks, allowing customization of their loadouts [2, 3, 6].

An Open Play Week will run from June 2 to June 9 on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. Anyone can play Marathon for free during this time, with progress carrying over into Season 2. Bungie encouraged players to "invite your friends to crew up as everyone will be starting out on a clean slate" [2, 7, 5, 6].

At the launch of Season 2, all player vaults, armories, and Runner shells will be reset to factory standards. Bungie said this will wipe gear and level the playing field, putting "everyone at the same starting line" [1, 7, 5, 6].

Narrative themes center on escalating conflict between the Runners and the United Earth Security Council (UESC). Nick Ardizzone, associate narrative director, said, "The UESC is tired of getting pushed around by the runners and they’re fighting back. As their opposition escalates, so too does the anomaly. One of your jobs is to find out why." New locations like an Observation science deck and environmental hazards causing psychosis and hallucinations will appear [7].

The Season 2 cinematic trailer focuses on spooky atmospherics and multi-limbed runner corpses, emphasizing the horror elements despite launching in summer [1, 3, 4].

This release aims to grow Marathon’s player base after Bungie announced it will end live-service updates for Destiny 2 after June 2026 [1, 3, 4]. The final Destiny 2 update is expected around June 9, coinciding with the end of Marathon’s Open Play Week [2, 3, 6].
