Bungie announced on May 21 that it will release the final live-service content update for Destiny 2, titled Monument of Triumph, on June 9, 2026 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. After this update, Destiny 2 will remain playable but will no longer receive active development or content additions [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
The Monument of Triumph update will include weapon and gear tuning, new player abilities, the return of the fan-favorite Sparrow Racing League mode, and a reintroduction of the game’s original Director interface to improve navigation [1]. Bungie said, "While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2" [1].
Destiny 2 launched in 2017 and has supported live-service content for nearly nine years [1, 4]. Bungie's decision to end development was made in early 2026, although some teams continued working on updates as the announcement approached [7].
The studio will shift its focus to new projects beyond Destiny, with incubation of fresh games underway after wrapping Destiny 2 development [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. It currently has no Destiny 3 game in active development or production, contradicting some fan speculation about a sequel [8, 2, 9, 10, 7].
Bungie also plans significant layoffs coinciding with the end of Destiny 2 development, a move that surprised many employees who had little advance notice [8, 2, 9, 10, 7]. Former Bungie legal chief Don McGowan expressed regret over the studio’s decline since Sony acquired Bungie for $3.6 billion in 2022, saying he wished he could have done more to preserve its legacy [10, 3, 11, 9].
The studio is now focusing more on its extraction shooter Marathon, including ongoing content updates and player engagement improvements [8, 9]. Sony has taken large impairment losses related to Bungie’s games, including $204 million for Destiny 2 and $765 million for Marathon [11, 9].
Bungie thanked players for their support and said, "We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made that journey with us. From the deepest part of our hearts, thank you, and we'll see you in the stars" [1, 2, 4, 12, 5, 6].
The Monument of Triumph update is scheduled for release on June 9, 2026, marking the official end of live-service content development for Destiny 2 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
