CD Projekt Red has announced a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt titled Songs of the Past, set to launch in 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The expansion is co-developed with Fool’s Theory, a team of industry veterans who worked on the original Witcher 3, and will return players to the role of Geralt of Rivia with a new story. CD Projekt described it as a 'proper big expansion' comparable in scope to the 2016 Blood and Wine expansion [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].
Songs of the Past is positioned as a standalone story but also serves as a loose prologue to the upcoming Witcher 4. CD Projekt co-CEO Michał Nowakowski said, "It is, in a way, a prologue, although it's not a prologue in a verbatim way in [that] it's a prologue for the actual Witcher 4." The expansion was originally planned for 2026 but delayed to 2027 "to achieve the best possible result from the consumer standpoint," he added [1, 5].
To prepare for the expansion, CD Projekt has raised the minimum PC requirements for The Witcher 3. The new baseline hardware includes an AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or Intel Core i5-8400 processor; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 or AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT 8GB GPU with 6 GB VRAM; 12 GB system RAM; 70 GB SSD storage; and Windows 11 64-bit OS. The game will require DirectX 12 and will drop support for Windows 10 and older Windows versions due to security, driver, and platform support considerations. Only SSDs will be supported, replacing previous HDD compatibility for improved performance and loading times [8, 9, 6, 7].
CD Projekt stated, "With new content coming to the game, we need to update our system requirements to ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Songs of the Past." It added, "Without ongoing security updates, official platform support, and continued GPU driver support, we will no longer test our games on Windows 10." Players who cannot meet the new requirements can still access earlier versions of the game [8, 9].
CD Projekt emphasized that Songs of the Past is a major expansion, not smaller downloadable content (DLC). Associate Game Director Paweł Sasko said, "We don’t do DLCs, and when we do, we give them away. Expansions are Big! Massive! Monster!" Senior Community Manager Marcin Łukaszewski explained, "Expansions provide lots of hours of gameplay, including new story, characters, etc., unlike free DLC like additional outfits." Community Manager Laura Beitzel added, "Songs of the Past will be aligned with what you're familiar with in Blood and Wine, and what you've come to expect from us when we do our expansions" [3, 4].
The Witcher 3 originally launched in May 2015 and has sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. It has two previous expansions: Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016). CD Projekt held a special anniversary stream for Blood and Wine on May 28, 2026. The company’s Q1 2026 financial report showed revenue of 191 million Polish zloty ($52.5 million) and net profit of 106 million zloty ($29 million), citing strong sales and subscription revenue from The Witcher series and other titles [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
