Cyan Worlds revealed a prototype for a new Myst game codenamed Project Anglerfish along with a teaser trailer in July 2026, confirming the project will not proceed to full development or release at this time for unspecified reasons [1, 2, 3].

The prototype was developed over about four months more than a year prior to its public reveal using Unreal Engine and was originally created solely for publisher review [1, 2, 3]. The teaser video features familiar Myst elements such as signature vistas, distinctive architecture, crystals, and a character seeking a powerful book [1, 2, 3]. Cyan Worlds stated they are proud of the prototype despite the project being halted [1, 2].

This announcement came after Cyan Worlds laid off approximately half their team, roughly 12 people, in March 2025 amid ongoing company transitions [2, 3]. Project Anglerfish marks the first new Myst game effort since Myst V: End of Ages, which released in 2005, making it roughly a 20-year gap since the last full Myst title [1, 3].

Eric Anderson, Cyan Worlds’ creative director, explained the prototype and teaser were intended only for publisher eyes. He added the studio remains hard at work on new games and experiences within the Myst universe and plans to share details when available [2]. Development director Hannah Gamiel stated the prototype "couldn’t move forward at the time" but was shared out of pride for the team's work [2].

Cyan Worlds continues to seek financing for future projects and is pursuing other Myst-related developments outside Project Anglerfish [2]. The studio has not announced any new release dates or confirmed next Myst titles at this time.
