Facepunch will remove obviously AI-created low-quality content from the main page of S&box, the open source game development platform released on April 28, 2026 as the spiritual successor to Garry's Mod. Garry Newman said the studio does not encourage using AI to create games, but sees it as a useful learning and productivity tool. He said, "Low quality, obvious AI-created slop is going to be a growing problem in every creative outlet. We don't encourage using AI to be creative. We don't encourage using AI to create games for you. But we do acknowledge that it's a good learning tool and it's a good productivity tool. We'll be taking action to promote human creativity and push obviously AI-created slop off the main page." [1]
S&box lets players build games with cartoony minion-like characters and export their creations as standalone Steam games. Newman also said the platform's first release is not finished, but said Facepunch will keep improving it with weekly updates and player feedback. He said, "I told someone the other day that it's kind of embarrassing how long it's taken us to get here. That if I was going to make it all from scratch now it'd probably take less than a year." [1]
The original Garry's Mod remains active after an April 29, 2026 update that added a fan-made Half-Life remake called Black Mesa. Newman said S&box's early version "isn't perfect," and pledged that the studio will keep listening to players as it shapes the platform. [1]
Facepunch said the next step is weekly updates to S&box, with the studio using player feedback to guide changes. [1]
