Fans of the digital deckbuilding game Inscryption have been building real-life versions with printed cards, handmade masks and rules lifted from the roguelike game, as creator CrypticCrafter works on a board game adaptation built for two players. [1]
The project tries to keep the feel of Inscryption while fixing a core problem from the video game: the original is asymmetrical, with the Leshy player holding an advantage that does not translate cleanly into a balanced tabletop match. [1]
Hockridge, the designer, said the main challenge was preserving the sense of outsmarting a stronger opponent without making the game unfair. “It's designed asymmetrically where Leshy has the advantage, and you almost have to break the game to win. That doesn't work in a two player game,” Hockridge said. [1]
That balance problem has shaped the fan adaptation from the start. The goal is not just to copy the look of Inscryption, but to make a version that two people can play against each other on equal terms while keeping the game’s strategy and tension intact. [1]
The board-game version is still being developed as fans continue to experiment with physical recreations of the digital title, from custom cards to themed props. [1]
