Rockstar Games confirmed on June 24 that the physical edition of Grand Theft Auto 6 will not include a disc but instead come with a digital download code [1, 2]. The physical release is scheduled for November 12, 2026, one week before the digital launch, allowing players to pre-download the game via the included code [1].
The company’s choice to ship without a disc is motivated partly by security concerns, aiming to prevent early leaks of the game [1, 2]. This approach effectively ends the second-hand and rental markets for physical GTA 6 copies since there is no disc to resell or trade [3, 4].
Matt Piscatella, senior director at Circana, said, "Grand Theft Auto 6 will be far from the first or only digital code in box product being sold at retail. It's been a fairly common practice (at least in the US) for several years now" [3].
Digital sales now dominate the market. Over half of Xbox Series consoles sold have no physical disc drives, and more than a quarter of PS5s are digital-only models [4]. However, physical disc sales still account for about 20% of overall sales. Daniel Ahmad, director at Niko Partners, noted, "the remaining 20% still accounted for 70 million physical disc games sold on PlayStation last year (although this figure is slightly inflated by bundled software)" [4].
Some retailers have refused to sell GTA 6’s discless physical edition. Video Games Plus in Canada stated, "For nearly 40 years, VGP has been committed to supporting physical media and preserving the value of physical game ownership. As part of that commitment, our company policy is that we do not carry physical products for video game consoles that contain only a digital download code" [1]. Loot Box Gaming in the US cited their focus on physical media preservation: "If a product can’t honor the people who pay their hard-earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers whom we value above anything else" [1].
Major retailers like GameStop, Amazon, and Best Buy are expected to sell the GTA 6 physical editions despite the lack of a disc [1]. The physical edition is priced at $80 [2].
The physical edition release on November 12 will allow players to use the download code for early access, ahead of the main digital launch date [1].
