Rockstar revealed on June 24 that Grand Theft Auto 6 physical editions will not include a disc but instead feature a digital download code inside the box. The physical version will release on November 12, 2026, allowing players to pre-download the game before its full launch a week later [1, 2].

The change is intended to prevent leaks and early access by removing physical discs that could be stolen or resold ahead of time [1, 2]. Retailers Video Games Plus in Canada and Loot Box Gaming have refused to sell the game due to their policies supporting physical media preservation. Video Games Plus stated, “For nearly 40 years, VGP has been committed to supporting physical media and preserving the value of physical game ownership. ... As a result, VGP will not be offering it for sale under our current company policy.” Loot Box Gaming added, "If a product can’t honor the people who pay their hard-earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers whom we value above anything else" [1].

The digital-only physical edition prevents players from trading, lending, or reselling their copy, impacting the pre-owned game market [3, 4, 5]. Gamer Ben, known as "videotech," said, "An important benefit of owning a disc is that you can lend the game to a friend or sell it later" [3]. However, others reported little impact, as many already buy digital versions.

Digital game sales now dominate the market, supported by a rise in disc-less consoles. More than half of Xbox Series consoles sold in the US have no physical drives, while over 25% of PlayStation 5 consoles are digital-only. Matt Piscatella, senior director at Circana, said, "The decline in physical video game spending has been ongoing for more than a dozen years at this point. ... I see this as just another step in a trend that has been ongoing since the early 2010s" [3, 5]. He also noted that "Grand Theft Auto 6 will be far from the first or only digital code in box product being sold at retail" [4].

Rockstar also announced the game's US price at $80 alongside the physical edition details [2].
