Rockstar Games announced that the playable map of Grand Theft Auto 6 is three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s playable area and twice the size of GTA 5’s map [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. The game’s setting, Vice City, alone is twice as large as Los Santos from GTA 5, and when combined with its surrounding suburbs, it is eleven times larger than Los Santos and its environs [2, 3, 4, 5, 6].
Rob Nelson, head of Rockstar North, said the game builds on previous efforts to create the most complex and densely populated open world the studio has developed. He described it as "the largest, deepest, most densely populated and complex world we have ever built for people to get lost in" and encouraged players to explore beyond mission markers, noting players who take time to explore "will be rewarded – a lot" due to the map’s massive scale [7, 3].
In February 2026, Nelson completed an approximately 80-hour playthrough including the main story and some optional narrative content, giving insight into the game’s length and depth [1, 2].
GTA 6 features around 600,000 unique animation sequences, roughly ten times more than GTA 5’s 55,000 and double the 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2 [8]. The game also introduces a more diverse non-player character system where NPC animation adjusts dynamically based on body size and height, improving realism in interactions, according to Nelson [9].
Players will be able to explore numerous interiors and engage in a wide range of activities such as scuba diving, piloting boats and watercraft, riding dirt bikes, and skydiving across the expansive open world [1, 2, 4, 10].
Rockstar also revealed that they used a modified version of Red Dead Redemption 2’s assets to film commercials and TV content within GTA 6 [11].
GTA 6 is scheduled for release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X on November 19, 2026 [1].
