Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead is introducing a new roguelite system named Planet Warfronts as a major upcoming feature for the game [1, 2]. The system was originally prototyped in late 2025 but delayed because it lacked sufficient content to meet the developer’s vision [1, 2].
Game director Mikael Eriksson explained that before launch, they experimented with "dynamic warfronts on planets," requiring players to make strategic community decisions to liberate planets. He said, "While it was promising, we realized we didn't have the content needed to do it justice at the time. We feel we've now added enough content to realize the vision we had for Planet Warfronts, and it's going to be the next big thing we're working towards in the Galactic War" [1].
Planet Warfronts organizes missions into three types: Defend missions in liberated territory, Frontline War missions, and Behind Enemy Lines missions. Players will fight to capture strategic locations such as cities, which can feature varying enemy variants [1, 2]. Achieving planet liberation goals may trigger gameplay-altering effects, such as time-limited city liberations or disabling enemy artillery to unlock new operations [1, 2].
The goal is to deepen the Galactic War and Community Progression systems and make planet liberation feel unique and epic for players. "The intention is to make it more fun to liberate planets with your squad and deepen the Galactic War and Community Progression systems," said Eriksson [1].
Johan Pilestedt, who previously teased the roguelite mode, described it as a feature that "changes the game fundamentally!" [1, 2].
Before Planet Warfronts launches, Arrowhead will introduce Galactic War Campaigns, which replace the previous Major Orders with longer community goals [2]. Development of Planet Warfronts is ongoing, with a rollout planned within the next few months from mid-2026 [1].
In June 2026, Eriksson provided a detailed public update on both Planet Warfronts and changes planned for Galactic War, signaling the feature’s imminent arrival [2].
