Warren Spector, a legendary game developer and founding father of the immersive sim genre, announced his retirement from game development in August 2026 after almost 44 years in the field [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. He made the announcement in a LinkedIn post saying, "Let me cut right to the chase. I'm retiring from game development. At least I think so. I've been here before and changed my mind, but this time I'm pretty sure I mean it" [1].

Spector, aged 70, cited his advancing age and health concerns as key reasons influencing his decision. "With all that behind me and with age and health (my business) catching up with me, I'm feeling like I've done what I set out to do," he wrote [1, 2, 4, 5].

Throughout his career, Spector worked on 17 digital games and nine add-on packs, including iconic franchises like Deus Ex, System Shock, Thief, and Epic Mickey, as well as tabletop RPGs and board games [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]. He helped popularize immersive sims with titles that offered players freedom and complex choice-driven gameplay [1, 2, 3, 4, 6].

Most recently, he served as chief creative officer at OtherSide Entertainment. There, he contributed to Underworld Ascendant and the commercially unsuccessful Thick As Thieves. The studio canceled development of Argos: Riders on the Storm in June 2026 and laid off 17 employees [1, 2, 4, 6].

Reflecting on the state of the industry, Spector said, "There are three games in particular I'd still like to make: one is very big, one is very small, and one I don't know how to make which scares me." He added, "The game business has changed and it's just not as much fun for me anymore" [1, 3, 5, 6].

He plans to focus on writing books, lecturing, consulting, and other pursuits in retirement [2, 3, 5, 6]. Spector encouraged younger developers to innovate and "make people forget people like me ever existed" [1, 3].

Shortly after his retirement announcement, Dishonored veteran Harvey Smith revealed a new immersive sim studio, Black Pony Immersive, based in Austin, Texas [7]. Smith said, "During a time of industry volatility, I'm proud to announce the next step in my video game journey with the reveal of our new studio. This effort reflects everything we've learned, and all we hold dear" [7].
