Mega Crit released a new beta patch for Slay the Spire 2 on May 5 aimed at rebalancing the game's baseline difficulty to make it more accessible while preserving challenge for high Ascension levels. The update also adds new badges and reworks cards such as Ironclad's Drum of Battle and Regent's Parry [1].
The developers explained, "When it comes to general balance, the base difficulty is quite hard right now. We're continuously adjusting this baseline difficulty to make it more accessible for a wide range of players, while also continuing to deliver a challenging game at the highest Ascensions" [1]. Completing runs on the highest Ascension difficulties is intended to remain a tough feat reserved for a dedicated minority.
One key focus of ongoing review is the Doormaker boss, which exhausts cards on certain turns and is often seen by players as an abrasive challenge. According to Mega Crit, "from looking at millions of runs, Doormaker's overall difficulty/winrate is in a good place (slightly weaker than the other Act 3 bosses both in kill rate and damage dealt). However, we do want to ensure that its mechanics aren't too abrasive against certain playstyles" [1].
Mega Crit is taking time to analyze player feedback, social media reactions, and gameplay data before making any further adjustments to Doormaker. The developers said, "We want to give players time to adjust a bit, otherwise we'll be balancing around kneejerk reactions" [1].
The beta patch launched today marks the latest step in refining the core experience and fine-tuning balance. Mega Crit will continue to monitor performance metrics and community input as they consider potential future changes to challenging elements like Doormaker [1].
