Daniels Umanovskis, designer and programmer of the strategy game Old World, revealed his plans to create a sequel to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri that updates its gameplay mechanics while preserving the original's high-quality story and science fiction themes. He described Alpha Centauri as "the best game ever" and praised its "top-level Civilization-like gameplay with an incredibly good atmosphere and game world," adding that its characters were "interesting and memorable" despite limited dialogue [1].
Alpha Centauri, released in 1999, combined classic 4X strategy elements with a deep narrative and memorable characters that distinguished it from traditional strategy games. A 2023 article by Sin in Rally Point noted the game’s focus on ideology and personality, setting it apart from others that rely on nationalism or fantasy tropes. Sin wrote, "Where a sequel to Civilization's 'send a colony ship into space' ending could have asked 'what if lasers and aliens', Alpha Centauri instead asked: Where is humanity going?" [1].
Umanovskis emphasized the importance of updating Alpha Centauri’s mechanics to incorporate advances in game design since the original. "Mechanically, such games have developed quite a bit since 1999 and I would really like to create a game that is based on the same ideas but renews the mechanics with what we have learned since then," he said [1].
Soren Johnson, former lead designer of Civilization 4 and head of Mohawk Games, commented on why sci-fi settings like Alpha Centauri remain important in 4X strategy games. He explained that modern or medieval historical settings lack a plausible "empty map" starting point that ancient or sci-fi eras provide. "There is a reason that 'modern' 4X games often look to a sci-fi setting to solve this problem," Johnson said [1].
Old World itself has been praised for its blend of Civilization-style gameplay with role-playing depth. In 2021, Rock Paper Shotgun called it "almost the perfect blend of Civilization and Crusader Kings III" [1].
Umanovskis voiced his aspiration to combine the narrative richness and sci-fi worldbuilding of Alpha Centauri with modern game design advancements in his envisioned sequel. He gave these remarks in a recent 2026 interview with Spillhistorie [1]. The project remains in early stages, with no release date announced.
