Id Software and MachineGames announced a free new campaign called Dawn of the Machine to mark Quake's 30th anniversary on August 6, 2026, at QuakeCon [1, 2, 3, 4]. The campaign features 19 new levels and maps with fresh gameplay challenges [1, 2, 5, 3, 4]. Alongside the extensive single-player content, it offers a new deathmatch map, a new soundtrack, and hidden secrets for players to discover [1, 2, 3, 4].

The story follows the Ranger character trapped in a dimension of endless illusion, reliving violent cycles and dying thousands of times. The Ranger tries to destroy the Nightmare Machine to break a time loop that traps him there, as described by the developers: "Beyond the hordes of monsters—twisted by an eternity in the Elder realms—lies the Machine. It is believed its destruction will shatter the illusion, finally breaking the loop" [1, 2, 3].

Players face new enemy variants such as the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog, and Blood Shambler, which feature new lethal behaviors not seen before in Quake [1, 3]. Weapon upgrades include the Super Axe, which unleashes lightning on hits, and the Laser Cannon, which fires ricocheting projectiles [1, 5, 3].

Additionally, the update brings archival materials from Quake's early development, including unfinished levels, giving fans a glimpse into the franchise’s origins [5, 3]. Dawn of the Machine is available free to all owners of the 2021 remaster of Quake on platforms including Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PC Store, Game Pass, Steam, PS5, PS4, and Nintendo Switch [1, 2, 4]. However, the update is not yet available on GOG or Epic Games Store versions but may be released there in the future [3].

The reveal took place during QuakeCon 2026, where co-founder John Romero joined a reunion panel alongside other founders [5, 4]. The event occurred amid challenges, as id Software recently faced layoffs affecting the studio [5, 3]. John Carmack remarked on the difficult timing, stating, "This is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month" [5].
