Santa Monica Studio unveiled God of War Laufey on June 2, revealing a 20-minute gameplay trailer during Sony's State of Play event [1, 2, 3]. The game centers on Faye, Kratos' deceased wife and Atreus' mother, as she awakens in the mysterious afterlife realm known as the Everywhen immediately after her funeral pyre from 2018's God of War [1, 2, 3].

Faye, also called Laufey the Just, is a frost giant from Jötunheim with powers that include foresight, magic, and combat expertise [4, 1, 3]. She is voiced by Deborah Ann Woll, reprising her role from God of War Ragnarok [4, 1, 2]. This installment is not a prequel but takes place parallel to or slightly after the previous Norse saga games [4, 2, 3].

The Everywhen is a hostile realm where gods from multiple mythologies clash for power. Enemies include Sekhmet, Begtse, and others, alongside strange elements like a cosmic cube named Phranque [1, 3]. Faye wields a new magical blade with sentient ribbons called Rue, offering unique combat mechanics [3].

Creative Director Cory Barlog described the godly inhabitants as "all assholes," critiquing their abusive relationship with power [1]. Game Director Ariel Lawrence said, "Faye left an incredible impression on Kratos and influences how he goes about his life now" [1].

Sony confirmed God of War Laufey will launch soon on PlayStation 5, with no current plans for a PC release [5].
