Santa Monica Studio announced a new God of War game starring Kratos on August 11 at San Diego Comic-Con, scheduled for release after God of War Laufey [1, 2, 3]. God of War Laufey will feature a new protagonist, Faye (Laufey), on a journey to the gods' afterlife called the Everywhen, with a confirmed release date for PS5 of February 16, 2027 [1, 2, 3].
Cory Barlog, director at Santa Monica Studio, said, "Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next" [2]. The new Kratos-led title will tie directly into Laufey’s story and characters to build on that foundation [1, 2, 3].
Despite the new direction with Faye, Kratos remains the core figure in the franchise. Barlog added, "Faye is, while it's a different thing, it's still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there. But there's always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We're super excited about that" [3]. Santa Monica Studio plans to develop many more stories starring Kratos going forward [2, 3].
Sony has confirmed that God of War Laufey and non-live-service God of War games will no longer be released on PC, limiting Laufey’s release to PS5 only [2]. Fan reactions to Laufey’s gameplay and new protagonist have been mixed [3].
God of War Laufey will launch on PS5 on February 16, 2027, while the new Kratos game is in early development and expected to follow after that release [1, 2, 3].
