Square Enix announced Final Fantasy Resonance, a turn-based JRPG and the first Final Fantasy game with the HD-2D visual style, combining pixel art with 3D backgrounds and dynamic camera effects. The game will launch worldwide on October 22, 2026, with the PC Steam version releasing one day later on October 23 due to time zone differences [1, 2, 3, 4].
Final Fantasy Resonance rebuilds the single-player experience from the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, which ended service in 2025. Unlike Brave Exvius, Resonance will not feature microtransactions or gacha mechanics [5, 2, 4, 6, 7].
The story follows Rain, a knight defending the magic crystals of the Kingdom of Grandshelt alongside friends. The game includes classic Final Fantasy elements such as chocobos, airships, and summons unlocked during dungeon exploration. It also features guest characters called "Visions" from across the series, including Cloud, Terra, Zidane, and Y'shtola [5, 2, 4, 7].
The new combat system is turn-based and distinct from the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, incorporating a "Stagger" mechanic that rewards strategic combo attacks. Players can adjust battle speed with 1.5x and 2x multipliers. IGN praised the colorful overworld and detailed battles after a hands-on preview session on June 10. The main story is estimated to take 30-40 hours, with full completion requiring 60-80 hours [5, 2, 4, 8, 9, 10].
Platforms include Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Windows. Physical editions will be available for PS5 and Switch 2; the latter uses a key card without the full game on the card, while the PS5 version comes on a full physical disc [1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 7].
The soundtrack features reused music from Brave Exvius alongside 33 new compositions. The Steam version employs Denuvo DRM. Pricing in Hong Kong sets the PS5 standard edition at 399 HKD and deluxe at 499 HKD. In China, the Steam standard edition costs 268 RMB, and the deluxe edition 348 RMB [2, 12].
Development for the game took around five years, with Square Enix producer Keisuke Nakashima saying new features had to be meaningful. He noted, "In some ways, starting from scratch on a new game can be easier" than porting the previous mobile title [6]. Another Square Enix producer explained the importance of HD-2D visuals being beautiful even in still frames [10].
Square Enix confirmed key game details including story length, gameplay systems, and platforms during a livestream on June 10, the same day as the official reveal at the Nintendo Direct event [1, 2, 3, 9]. IGN published a 10-minute gameplay demo on June 11 [8].
Final Fantasy Resonance is set to be one of the major JRPG releases of 2026, with a global launch date on October 22.
