Square Enix announced a full restart of development on Dragon Quest 12 during its 40th anniversary livestream on May 27, 2026, and renamed the game Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams [1, 2, 3]. The original subtitle, The Flames of Fate, was dropped after the team faced significant hurdles with the initial version, said executive producer Yosuke Saito. "Work on the original version, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, hit a lot of hurdles along the way. But as we kept talking with Mr. Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start from scratch," Saito said [1].
Yuji Horii, the series creator involved in the redesign, said the game took a different direction than initially announced. "The game has gone in a different direction to what we originally announced, but I think you’ll enjoy it," Horii said [2]. He added that the game’s theme focuses on "what lies beyond dreams," describing it as "a bright and exciting future," contrasting with the darker tone planned for The Flames of Fate [3].
The new subtitle Beyond Dreams reflects the story of the protagonist, who experiences mysterious visions in his sleep tied to the game's narrative [2, 3]. Despite the restart, the game retains character designs by Akira Toriyama and music by Koichi Sugiyama, both late contributors to the series [2, 3].
Square Enix said Beyond Dreams will have a brighter, more traditional Dragon Quest tone, moving away from the darker direction of the previous version [1, 2, 3]. The RPG will also introduce new features not seen in past Dragon Quest titles, aiming to evolve the long-running series [2].
Saito warned fans the restart means a longer wait. "We’re hard at work on 12, but due to a reshuffle of the team and a restart of development, it's going to be a bit longer until it's in your hands," he said [1].
The original Dragon Quest game debuted in Japan on May 27, 1986, marking 40 years for the series on the anniversary date when these new details were revealed [1, 2, 3]. Dragon Quest 12 was first announced as The Flames of Fate in 2021, during the series’ 35th anniversary [1].
