Star Citizen officially passed $1 billion in crowdfunding since its 2012 announcement, reaching the milestone around May 24-25 during the DefenseCon in-game event. [1, 2, 3] The game remains in early access and development, continuously funded by player pledges. [1, 2]

Cloud Imperium Games (CIG) sells virtual spaceships to support development. Among them is the Anvil Odin, a large capital ship offered for $5,000 as a limited concept pledge in May 2026. [1, 2, 3] The Anvil Odin is not yet flyable and has no firm release date; buyers receive loaner ships until it becomes playable. [1, 2, 3]

Players had to submit an application essay and join the Odin Founders Club to purchase the Anvil Odin. The club said, "Captaining a ship of this scale is a major undertaking built around leadership, coordination, and community, and we wanted the introduction of the Odin to reflect that spirit from the very beginning." [1, 2]

The Anvil Odin is a battlecruiser roughly 752 to 762 meters long, with up to 65 turrets including vertical launch missiles, manned, remote, and point-defense turrets. [2, 3] It features a hangar, hospital, canteen, and tram system and can support a crew of 33 to 65+ players. [2, 3]

Star Citizen has about 6.5 million players who have contributed over one billion dollars or approximately £743 million across 14 years. [1, 2] The game has faced criticism for its prolonged development, uncertain launch timeline, and high prices on unreleased ships. [2]

Chris Roberts, CIG founder, said, "I think that the goal that everybody is supporting is pretty ambitious and huge, but also a pretty exciting one. A lot of people want to spend time adventuring out in the virtual world of something that's like Star Citizen, and that's really what's helped get us to where we are..." [1]

One player who purchased the Anvil Odin said, "I measure my happiness with a game based off of how many hours I've played it, despite the game being buggy and broken at times, I play this game more than anything else in my limited free time. So for me, as long as things keep improving and they keep adding content then I will be happy with my purchase." [1]

Cloud Imperium Games emphasized, "We offer pledge ships to help fund Star Citizen’s development. These ships will be available for in-game credits and/or will be otherwise earnable through play in the final universe. They are not required to start or succeed at the game." [2]

The surge in funding during the DefenseCon event pushed the total over the $1 billion mark by May 24. [2, 3] Development continues with no announced date for the Anvil Odin's playable release.
