Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone addressed recent speculation about adding cheating and divorce mechanics to Stardew Valley, emphasizing he has no plans to implement these features in the game [1, 2, 3].
Barone explained that while he discussed the theoretical possibility of allowing players to cheat and face consequences, he was not announcing any new content. "I'm not going to actually do this. I was just talking theoretically, that if I were then I wouldn't just make it some consequence-free thing, everyone would hate you, there would be severe consequences for your moral failures," he said [1]. He added, "In a sandbox game, you should be able to do wicked things and then face the consequences" [2].
On divorce and adultery mechanics, Barone expressed moral reservations and concerns about the tone of Stardew Valley. He feels such themes would be "too realistic and heavy for the game’s tone," which is designed to offer escapism [1, 2, 3]. Barone said the only divorce-related feature he seriously considered was allowing players to break up two specific NPC marriages—Pierre and Caroline or Robin and Demetrius—but found it too complex to implement. "...even that is probably too heavy and serious, and would be a ton of work to adjust all dialogue and tone of everyone in town in consequence, and Grandpa ashamed of you," he explained [3].
The rumors stemmed from a poor machine translation on a Japanese site that falsely suggested Barone would introduce infidelity and divorce options, which he later denied [3].
Barone later took to social media after the interview to clarify his stance and asked fans to remain calm on the issue [1, 3]. He is currently focused on developing his next title, Haunted Chocolatier [1].
