Subnautica 2 launched into early access on May 16, 2026, as Unknown Worlds Entertainment promised the largest and most polished early access release the studio has ever done [1, 2]. Anthony Gallegos, a representative of the studio, said, "The game that we're putting out right now is bigger and more polished than anything the studio's ever done for a first early access release" [1].

The developer aims to build Subnautica 2 alongside its community through an open development process. Player feedback is gathered via a live Nolt board where users can submit ideas, vote on suggestions, and track planned changes or rejections [3, 1, 2]. Gallegos explained the studio's approach: "It was always okay with putting out early ideation because they wanted to do open development, where the community gets to see something that's unfinished intentionally so they can provide feedback and have a real impact on the final product" [1].

Rather than launching a nearly finished game, the developers chose to start with an intentionally incomplete version to iterate with the community's input. "We very intentionally didn't do that, because even though we know we will probably get some flack for it, it is very important... that we build it alongside fans," Gallegos said [2].

Subnautica 2 is expected to remain in early access for at least two years, possibly up to three, with continuous updates throughout that period [3]. The original Subnautica spent four years in early access, evolving substantially during that time [2].

Gallegos also said patches will release simultaneously on all platforms supporting cross-play, including Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games Store. The developers are exploring options to introduce experimental branches or beta access on Xbox—a feature common on PC but rare on Xbox Game Preview titles [3]. He noted, "We’re even looking at trying to figure out, like, are there ways that we could do different branches with the Xbox?" [3]. This comes after Microsoft canceled a Game Pass feature called Project Moorcroft that would have allowed such experimental demos on Xbox [3].

Before launch, over 5 million Steam users added Subnautica 2 to their wishlist, indicating strong anticipation for the game [1].

The next stage will be the ongoing rollout of updates and community-driven content changes throughout the extended early access window to refine the game before its full release.
