Subnautica 2's first major update, Adaptive Measures, was released on July 8, 2026, introducing new gameplay features and improvements to the popular underwater survival game [1, 2, 3]. The update added the ability to stun fish and certain creatures using the Sonic Resonator, though players are still not allowed to kill them. "A bunch of the creatures now have stun states, so when you hit them with the Sonic Resonator, you'll see them clearly communicate that they've become stunned," said Anthony Gallegos of the developer team [1, 4, 2, 3].

Creatures now also have improved flinch and recoil animations when hit by tools such as the Survival Multitool or Sonic Resonator, enhancing visual feedback during encounters [1, 4, 2, 3]. Early in the game, BioMod stations have become more abundant, allowing players easier access to swapping passive abilities. After acquiring a certain tool, players can scan creatures to unlock additional passive BioMod slots, deepening customization options [1, 2, 3].

Hostile Blight creatures have clearer transition states between passive and aggressive behavior, reducing surprise attacks on players [1, 2, 3]. Wrecks scattered underwater now feature more coherent visuals and light puzzle gameplay sections for players to explore [1, 2, 3].

The update also overhauled the PDA user interface for improved clarity and added playback functionality for previously collected audio logs, aiding story immersion [1, 2, 3]. A new personal storage option, buildable within player bases, was introduced to help manage collected resources [2, 3].

Since its early access launch in May 2026, Subnautica 2 has sold over 4 million copies worldwide, with 1 million sold within the first hour [4]. Developer Scott MacDonald commented, "We've tended to have better success the earlier that we put something out because we can find out what players actually are interested in" [4]. Despite praise for the update, players remain divided over the continued inability to kill creatures in the game world [1, 4].

The developer estimates the full version 1.0 release of Subnautica 2 is still two to three years away from now [4]. The next update, Early Access 1.2, will focus on co-op features including voice chat, emotes, trading, and revive functionality, scheduled to arrive soon [3]. Gallegos said, "We want to listen to feedback from players who feel they can't defend themselves in an area or something like that, then we want to ideate on the means in which they can do that" [1].
