CD Projekt Red announced on August 25, 2026, that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered will be released on September 29, 2026, as a free upgrade for all owners of the base game across multiple platforms including GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5].
The remaster features upgraded visuals, improved combat with enhanced monster behaviors, revamped traversal and mount handling, a reworked skill tree, new finishers, expanded photo mode, transmogrification allowing separate armor appearance and stats, and numerous quality of life improvements [2, 6, 4, 7, 5, 8]. Jakub Kutrzuba, CD Projekt Red’s executive producer, said, “We put a lot of our time into how the game actually plays... The game just plays smoother, you know? There's no immersion breaking stuff anymore.” [8]
The two major expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are included for free with the remaster and are now free for all base game owners on digital storefronts [1, 2, 6, 3, 4, 9, 5]. Owners of the original Nintendo Switch version will receive a free upgrade to the native Switch 2 remaster version when it launches, though the remaster is not available as a direct upgrade on the original Switch hardware [6, 4, 9, 5].
CD Projekt Red collaborated with notable modder HalkHogan, creator of the popular Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project (HDRP) mod, to integrate his visual improvements officially into the remaster. HalkHogan stated, "HDRP will no longer be needed. My work will be officially available in the game." [10, 11]
The base game’s price on Steam increased from $39.99 to $49.99 ahead of the remaster launch [12]. In addition, the remaster will be sold on PC via Battle.net for the first time, with unlocks such as a Geralt-themed Diablo 4 skin included [4].
Since its original 2015 release, The Witcher 3 has sold over 65 million copies. CD Projekt Red expects the remaster and the upcoming expansion Songs of the Past, slated for 2027, to push the player base to 70-75 million copies [1, 2, 10, 3, 4, 7, 5, 8]. Miles Tost, CD Projekt Red’s level design lead, said, "This maps a great opportunity for people... to jump in with the improvements on the remaster update and get a whole lot of stuff for free before we ship the Songs of the Past." [1]
The next major release for The Witcher 3 will be the Songs of the Past expansion, set to launch in 2027 [1, 2, 10, 3, 4, 7, 5, 8].
