Total War: Warhammer 40,000 will let players destroy terrain, buildings and cover on its battle maps, giving commanders new ways to reshape the battlefield, Creative Assembly said. [1]

David Petry, the game’s battle product owner, said destruction will be a key part of play. "One of the really big and exciting things that we're doing here is the destruction now is going to come into play. That forest - if you don't like it, get rid of it," Petry said. [1]

The system will not make every object breakable. Petry said the team limited destruction to areas where it "really works and makes sense." [1]

Players can clear obstacles with surface-to-surface ordnance or call in orbital strikes to remove cover, according to Joshua Williams, head of community engagement. Williams said the "biggest mental shift" is learning to factor in the ability to delete terrain cover and obstacles. [1]

That changes how maps play compared with earlier Total War titles. The studio said the ability to destroy terrain and cover is the biggest mental shift in strategy, because players can alter the density of tactical maps during a fight. [1]

Maps will also vary by biome and faction architecture, and smaller tactical layouts can feel different depending on spawn location. The game’s map design is meant to give each battle a distinct layout even before destruction starts. [1]
